Roman-era fighters, the famous gladiators of Rome, based their diet on mixes of grains and legumes. In fact, meat and fish were considered valuable foods that only the wealthy and Roman citizens could feed on. The word soup, on the other hand, comes from the medieval custom of using a wide slice of bread as a plate, on which the various dishes were placed. This, after it had soaked up all the flavors of the meal, was given to the servants, who would put it to cook in a pot along with water and vegetables, to create what we now call soups.
