Cicerale is a small town located in the generous land of Cilento. Here chickpeas have always been the main source of livelihood and economy. In recent years, however, only a few people are left to carry on the cultivation of this delicious legume, which requires specific techniques that are sometimes very strenuous: Cicerale chickpeas, in fact, must first be weeded and left to dry under the Cilento sun, so that they can then be harvested towards the end of July. The plants are then laid on burlap sacks, covered and beaten with large wooden sticks to make the small dried chickpeas.
Francesco Vastola is one of the heroic farmers left to cultivate this little gem.
